№ 698. Music Lessons

Russian-German pianist Olga Scheps presents melodies from famous piano pieces and speaks about their origins and music-historical development. Scheps guides you through piano pieces by the likes of Prokofiev, Chopin, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Corelli, Liszt, Rachmaninov and Schubert. She’s even done her own “classical” version of the hardcore techno music by German band Scooter, which created quite an uproar. But far from being a gimmick, that album was a declaration of Olga Scheps’ belief that distinctions between different music genres are arbitrary and ultimately meaningless, since composers have always drawn inspiration from popular music of their times. Olga Scheps displays her virtuosity by playing the different melodies from piano pieces in this exclusive interview with DW Classical Music. A fascinating insight into the world of melodies from a truly extraordinary pianist! Melodies from: (00:00) Scooter: How Much Is The Fish? (02:56) Jean Bernard & Jean-Marie Prima: Son ar chistr (05:25) Sergei Prokofiev: Piano Sonata No. 7 in B-flat major, Op. 83 (05:43) Frédéric Chopin: Nocturne in E-flat major, Op. 9, No. 2 (06:06) Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Piano Sonata No. 16 in C major, K. 545 (07:48) Peter Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1 in B♭ minor, Op. 23 (11:06) Arcangelo Corelli: Variations on "La Folia" (11:43) Franz Liszt: Rhapsodie espagnole, S. 254, R. 90 (12:32) Sergei Rachmaninov: Variations on a Theme of Corelli, Op. 42 (16:45) Franz Schubert: "Wandererfantasie" in C major, Op. 15 Subscribe to DW Classical Music:
